Cunscough Lane is now the A506 & is parallel to the M58. It becomes Liverpool Road at the Royal Oak, when it enters Bickerstaffe. It is on the border of Melling, Aughton, Bickerstaffe & Maghull. The Liverpool & SW Lancs. Society hold records of Melling (also Kirkby & Halsall) & the ODFHS holds all the others in the district.
The email shown on message 259 is not being accepted so I am unable to contact Michael direct. I need details of the census page number & information on the page to help further.

MICHAEL DAVIES

29 December 2010
A warm sunny new year to you all.
I'm trying hard to find the burial place of my great grand father, Richard Davies.
He was last heard of at an address in Cunscough Lane, Melling about 1911.
He died in 1923 aged 74, I believe, therefore he must be buried locally to Melling.
His wife's name was Hannah and in life he was a cattle inspector for Liverpool Corporation.
Any lead that you can provide me with would be most welcome. I don't know the area at all.
Thank you
Michael (enomnf3[at]virginmedia.com)

The fourth update to our canal families website - www.boatfamilies.org.uk (nb: clicking this link will open a new window) - adds more than 1,000 names and takes the total number of individuals to 5,899. The largest increase is 54 new Robinsons, the families of Richard Robinson b 1836 Wigan and Catherine Spencer of Downholland, and of James Robinson b 1815 Scarisbrick, who moved to Leigh where his sons and grandsons worked the Bridgwater and Cheshire canals. New to our site are 39 members of the Sharrock family of Rufford and Burscough, mostly descendants of James Sharrock and Mary Fairclough who married in Croston in 1791.
There are 47 more Harrisons, 43 more Hartleys and 43 more Barrows. Another 10 families have seen increases of two to three dozen:- Cheetham, Dobson, Forshaw, Gill, Halsall, Jackson, Lamb, Parr, Pedder and Webster. We would ask members researching any of the above names to check our site and advise us of any corrections/additions by emailing boatfamilies@odfhs.org.uk. Thanks for recent contributions go to Glenn MacLeod (Websters and Sharrocks), to Joyce Wynn (Gibbons and Vickers) and to Brian Pillier (Harrisons).
Lamb is now the second most frequent name at 198, behind Forshaw (241) and ahead of Carrington (194), Baldwin (153) and Gibbons (139). We have increased the threshhold for inclusion in the Main Names list to 60, which removes Dutton, Hunter and Stazicker, but adds Hesketh and Barrow. We have also removed the secondary links for Baldwin, Forshaw, Langton and Robinson, leaving only the largest branch in each case. Of course, all the individuals in the removed branches are still in the Full Index, but these amendments keep the Main Names list to a manageable size.
Many entries now have a "Notes" section containing additional information including "Also Known As" (AKA). Look for this above the "Sources" line at the end of each page. An example is Thomas Carrington, b 22.6.1886.

DAVID PETERS

16 December 2010
My name is David Peters and my email address is david@oaksedge.org.uk
The 1911 census shows my Great Grandfather, William Auty living at Southfield House, Southport Road, Ormskisk together with his wife Annie. If the house still exists and I can find it, I would like to take a photograph. In 1911, I believe that William was working as a steward on the Cunard Liners crossing the Atlantic. So, either Southfield House is/was not very grand or they merely rented a part of it.
I realise that you do undertake searches, but wonder if any members happen to know anything about the house and its location.

RUTH WEEDON (FLETCHER)

I have just found your website and may be able to help the writer of message 13.
The Voses in Burscough catholic churchyard are my relatives.
Ann Vose, married James Fletcher of the mill, Milldam Lane and they were my great grandparents.
I have discovered that it is extremely difficult to trace catholic ancestors because they had to keep below the radar. They were unable to be married, christened or buried, or worship openly until the late 17oos (I had the exact details, but, stupidly, lent them to someone who never returned them). In tracing my Voses and Fletchers I was greatly helped by Ernest Rossbottom's book about Burscough (yes, I lent that too, and it's out of print now but local libraries should have it). Also, the archivist at St. John's was most helpful. She told me mass was celebrated at farms, secretly, by mendicant priests. The Voses and Fletchers had land confiscated because of their faith in the 1600s.
I have some family mortuary cards, mainly from the 19th century.
Hope this helps,
Ruth Weedon (Fletcher) (ruthweedon[at]googlemail.com)

Hello
I'm trying to trace a great aunt, Margaret Hopson nee Jones, born in Bull Bay, Anglesey, in 1868 and died about 1951 aged 83 in Ormskirk She was married to Robert Hopson in about June 1899. As far as I know they had two children, Robert and Mona but have no date of births. Margaret had a sister Elizabeth living around the same area, also born in Bull Bay in 1874 and married to Robert Waring in about 1912. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm trying to determine what the "Mansion House Academy" was in the 1860's. It was located on St. Helens Rd in Ormskirk.
My G G Grandfather (Thomas Godfrey) was there at the age of 8 according to the 1861 England Census Record. I am attemping to find his parents however this was obviously his place of residence as he is listed along with 19 other boys all under the age of 16. What type of 'Academy' was this?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Butterworth,
I can't help you with history of Wragg, who I have just found on the web, but have a mystery photo taken outside Rainford vicarage in the late 1800's or early 1900's
You can see it on St. Helens Back in the Day. There's just a possibility you might be able to have some info on it. I would be most grateful for any information.
Many thanks,
Irene Smith. (richard.smith58[at]blueyonder.co.uk)

Hi there!
I'm trying to find family relations of my great grandfather John Moss
Turner born 1855 in Bickerstaffe. His parents were Thomas Turner 1831 - 1884 and
Ann Moss 1831 - 1886.
I know that he married a Catherine Bunney in 1879 at the Parish Church of
Skelmersdale.
In 1901 he was living in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan, working as a coal miner.
Recent contact with member 81 was not of the same family.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
