Well, Elizabeth - yes and no!

The Thomas Cheetham you found is indeed Elizabeth's father (and my 3xgreat-grandfather). Elizabeth married (at least) three times, 1 Fairhurst Baybutt, 2 Henry Carrington and 3 George Meadows - and many tales are told of her. But the Baybutt/Carrington children are a problem, and I don't know if I have the answer. But I'll email you a couple of files - see if they help or complicate things further!

Baybutt/Carrington mystery, can anyone help?

Edward Baybutt was born in 1878, and married Ellen Glover in 1901, however it was said that Edward was born a Carrington, but changed his name upon marriage as he had a falling out with his father. I'veobtained Edward "Baybutt's" marriage certificate, on which he states his father is Fairhurst Baybutt. I've looked on the 1881 census and not found an Edward Baybutt of the right age, but did find Edward Carrington on a flat boat "Padran", along with Elizabeth Carrington 38, Thomas Cheetham 72 and Susannah Baybutt 14. I wondered if Thomas was Elizabeth's father and Susannah her daughter from a first marriage? relationships are not shown on their entry on the 1881. I've found in the 1871 a Fairhurst Baybutt, with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Susannah, I've also found a death for a Fairhurst Baybutt in Dec. 1871 in Scarisbrick, and a marriage of an Elizabeth Baybutt to a Henry Carrington in All Saints , Wigan in 1872. Am I taking two and two and making five? If I can find out if Edward's true father was a Carrington, I can then work at finding a link with my husband's Carrington family. Has anyone else come across this Edward please?

Thank you

I am helping Carla with her research in Maghull.

I am unable to accurately identify the position of the Farmers Arms Pub, I think it was nearly opposite the old Coach & Horses Pub.

Also I think that Meadows Row is the old Liverpool Road and almost opposite "High Pastures House" then the home of Dr. Gordon & still a doctor's surgery. We would appreciate any more thoughts.

Hi,

I am researching the Wright and Halsall families of Ormskirk.

John Wright married Mary Halsall at St Peter & St Paul on September 30, 1834. I think I have now found John's family, but Mary's remains a mystery. She was baptized at SP & SP on May 7, 1809 and her parents were James Halsall and Ann (Nanny) Heaton.

I can find nothing at all on James. He must have been considerably older than Ann, who he married in Winwick in April 1792, since there was a previous marriage to Margaret Lowe in October 1768. I can find only 1 child, Elizabeth, born to Margaret, but see 7 born to Ann. (Mary being the youngest).

If anyone has any infomation at all on James and his family I would love to hear from them.

Thanks,

Judy, (molesworth[at]sympatico.ca)

Does anyone know where Turnpike Road in Maghull was please? My gt-grandfather lived there in 1901, at the Farmers Arms. (in 1891 it is recorded as Old Turnpike Road). Neighbouring properties in 1901 were Forrest's Cottages, The Poplars & Rockfield.

In 1911 his address was Liverpool Road, Maghull, at what looks like 'Meadows Row' - would that be what is now called The Meadows, which is just to the south of the current Liverpool Road North, opposite St Andrews Church?

I am visiting Maghull later this month so would love see where he lived.

Many thanks in advance.

Keith Jenkins Thank you for that info. Mary E was my gr grandma and was married to Walter. She left her husband and son (my grandad) around 1908 I think to go to Canada. On 1901 census my grandad is shown as living with his dad while daughter Jane is as you say with her mum. However on 1911 brother and sister are both back with their dad because mum had disapeared. My problem is that I am not sure what name she used or who she travelled to Canada with. I am still searching.
