My direct ancestor is Jane Ashton born in Ormskirk in 1825 daughter of John Ashton, sawyer, and his wife Margaret. I have found two likely Johns - both being a sawyer. By the time of the census in 1841 Jane was away from home so I have been unable to work out which John was her father - he appears to have been still alive in 1851 when she married John Simpson.
Does anyone have her in their family tree too, or can eliminate her from their John and Margaret Ashton. Any help would be greatly appreciated....I originally started looking for her in 1999 and had assumed her mother was Margaret Sharples, but on finding the recent registers online (rather than the Bishops Transcripts) I am doubting that it is the right Margaret....
Any suggestions much appreciated....

I am not sure who is responsible for the online parish records for Ormskirk but I have found them to be such a help in my research. I have found so much information to add to my knowledge of my ancestry. The names I have found are Margaret Culshaw, with parents John Culshaw and Ann Farrington, Ann Farrington's parents William Farrington and Ellen Porter, John Culshaw's parents Peter Culshaw and Elizabeth Burrows, Ellen Porter's parents Henry Porter and Ellen Meadows, Elizabeth Burrows parents John Burrows and Ann, and Peter Culshaws parents John Culshaw and Betty. I live in Ontario Canada and therefore cannot go to the records office in person and this has been a wonderful resource. If anyone is related to or researching these names I would appreciate it if you would contact me.

Hi, I am researching Samuel Wasse Higginbottom and his wife Mary Ann Sharrock for a forthcoming book on IOM Shipping. Sam was born 1853 at STalybridge and became a successful coal owner, with 3 pits at Norley Pemberton and also at Lostock and Wrexham. I am reasonable happy on his lineage, but any Higginbottom ata would be welcome. My big problem is Mary Ann Sharrock. She was born c1853 (possible in Wales but that is suspect). SHe and Sam Higginborrom married at ORMSKIRK in 1877, and in 1880 had a son Henry Sharrock Higginbottom. Beyound that she has been a shadowy figure with no proven data on her parents etc. ANy help for this section on the book would be deeply appreciated.
thanks

Hello Keith Jenkins. I have received the birth certificate for my grandfather Thomas Edward Lamb. It arrived a couple of weeks ago but I have been side-tracked as usual! His mother's name is recorded as Margaret LAMB, formerly BOYLIN. The family's address at the time was Orrells Lane, Burscough.
I will send for the marriage of Margaret Boylin to Edward Lamb soon, but I have another mystery to solve on my father's side of the family, again!!!

I have just read message no 152. My ggg grandmother was Esther Westhead who married Thomas Cattrell (or Catterall, Catroll.. there are all sorts of spellings) in Ormskirk 1827. Thomas died sometime between 1851 and 1856 so Esther could have remarried. I dont know anything about Disleys etc but there seems to be a coincidence in the names I will certainly look up what I can

I am researching family history of the Hastings family who purchased The Robin Hood lodging house ,56, Aughton Street, Ormskirk in 1908. This three storey building was demolished for the Gas Tower and showrooms. On the 1911 Census records there were 26 people listed at this address, mostly Irish. Although i have a photo of the Robin Hood and the bill of sale, i would like to know when the building was demolished. Can you please help?

Keith
I can't believe I have received such a quick reply, thank you very much! I have sent for my grandfather's birth certificate (Thomas Edward LAMB) just to confirm his mother's maiden name. When I have received that, I will send for the marriage you advised me of.
Watch this space!!

Heather - There's an Edward and Margaret Lamb in 1901 living in Orrell Lane, Burscough, with daughter Margaret 4 and "Thos Ed" aged 5 months. Dad 38 is a canal boat captain, b Burscough (could 'Barow' be a misread for Bursco/Burscow?). Mother Margaret 30 is b Ormskirk.
There a marriage Q4 1891 at St Nicholas, Liverpool (the boatmen's church) between Edward Lamb and Margaret Boylan, and the 1891 census has a Boylan family living in Burscough St, Ormskirk, head Thomas Boylan, 54, a fish dealer from Ireland, with daughter Margaret aged 21. This should get you moving - I'll email you a couple of files. I'm interested as I have two unconnected Thomas Lambs in my tree, one married a Dorothy Fairclough, the other a Mary Watkinson.

LAMB family, Burscough.
My maternal grandfather THOMAS EDWARD LAMB was born in Burscough in c1900.
On the 1911 census, he is living at Platts Lane, Lathom. His father was EDWARD LAMB (born Barow) a Boatman/Flatman on the canal; mother MARGARET (born Ormskirk); sisters VERONICA and NELLIE (both born Burscough), and WINNIE (born Lathom). There were possibly some older siblings as the parents had been married for 18 years.

I am trying to trace the background to a John Pennington born in Halsall circa 1781 and who was later farming at Winwick in the 1841 census. Last year we came north and visited Halsall but of course the church was locked so got no further. Nor can I find the BMD records that might give both background and why he moved to Winwick to farm. If anyone knows anything or can make suggestions I would much appreciate as distance from the area is not helpful. Thanks.
