The Golden Lion is still operating as a public house in Moor Street, Ormskirk. Its very popular on Market Days, doing lunches. Seems to have dropped the Inn from its name. Can't find any photos at the moment but will try and get you one.

One of my ancestors - William Rothwell b 1811 at Upholland & died
1872 West Derby, was the publican (or owner?) of the Golden Lion Inn in Moor
St. from at least 1851 till his death. I presume that the Inn does not exist
anymore - cannot find it in any maps etc, but does anybody have any
information on the pub, maybe pictures etc?
Cheers

In reply to query number 203, I have photographs with captions concerning the Ridings in my book `Ormskirk and District ' in Britain in Old Photographs published by Alan Sutton in1995 on page 46 and on the cover. I think you could get the book in the library It is out of print at the moment but may be republished shortly.

Does anyone know of Alfred Charlesworth who was born c 1870 in Cheshire but who lived at 2 Chapel Street, Ormskirk, and fought in the 1914-18 War? I think I've found him in the 1901 Census aged 30 living in Wettenhall, nr Nantwich, a farmer with a wife Ada, but his war records list him as an unmarried navvy living in Ormskirk. Confusing . . .

I an researching the MANCHESTER; PEET and FILES families from the Ormskirk area (Bickerstaffe)
I have traced the Manchesters back to Henry MANCHESTER b 1710 in Wigan died 1787 Bickerstaffe. His wife was called Ann but i have no marriage details.
I have used parish registaers and IGI to find Hernry's father was called James MANCHESTER born c 1680 no wife's name.
From IGI I have found an Anna MANCHESTER had a child baptised at Wigan 1677 called James. Then comes the difficulty. Her father appears to be William ASPSHAW alias MANCHESTER from WIGAN Register baptised 1656.
Can anyone help me with thhis family or the PEET and FILES families
Thanks Lynne (lynne.lay[at]virgin.net)

Hi I am trying to find any information and any descendents of
William James MEDCALF an artist b. circa 1879 died 1930 formerly of Daisy
bank, Bold Lane ,Aughton, Ormskirk (1901) and then Lafayette, Granville Park
,Aughton (1911) Son of Thomas and Harriet Medcalf. Brother of Robert
Bunyon Medcalf, with sisters Edith M, Margaret E ,Gertrude H and Ellen E
William is described in a newspaper report of April 1914 as having executed
a magnificent banner depicting St George which was presented to the Scouts
in Ormskirk District. We (1st Ormskirk Scout Group) have recently had this
banner restored, renovated ( at very significant cost) as part of our
Centenary Celebrations and it was re-dedicated on the St Georges Day Parade
this year. We know William served and was wounded in WW1 and internet
searches suggest he died in 1930 .Some of his art works still appear in
auctions. His father and brother were both described as Architects and may
have been associated with the company of Medcalf and Medcalf of Liverpool.
We are hoping to acquaint William's descendents with his legacy to us
before the Banner is laid up for permanent display . Any information would
be useful.
Kind Regards Ray Fitzsimmons (fitzsimmons[at]ormsk.demon.co.uk)

Dear ODFHS
I hope you don't mind me contacting you but I hope you someone may be able to help me out. I am researching an Elizabeth Culshaw who was born about 1811 in Bispham which I presume is Bispham Green as she married in Ormskirk to Thomas Huyton and the first of her children were born around that region before moving to Stoke. There are a number of IGI baptisms for an Elizabeth around that date in surrounding parishes (Rufford+Lathom I think) but I believe they are not the Elizabeth I am looking for. I was wondering if any one has come across an Elizabeth baptised possibly in Mawdesley and Bispham around that date or might know of anyone who might have an interest in Culshaws from that area I might get in touch with.
Many thanks for your time and help.
Regards
