talk report - MAY 2008

28 May: Annual General Meeting - followed by a short talk
The East End of the Derby Chapel, Ormskirk Parish Church - Mrs Jean Gidman

Mrs Gidman again gave us an interesting talk on Ormskirk Parish Church and illustrated it with pictures of documents from the Archives showing the changes to the church over the centuries beginning with the 1609 map. She concluded her short talk by drawing our attention to the heraldry above the exterior of the East window of the Derby Chapel which shows the Eagle of the Lathom family, the Legs of the Isle of Man, the arms of the 3rd Earl of Derby, and the arms of the 15th Earl of Derby. The last two indicate the founding of the Chapel by the 3rd Earl and the restoration at the time of the 15th Earl both of whom are buried in the Church.
