25 June: Visit to St Michael’s Church, Aughton
It was a beautiful summer’s evening when about thirty members visited St Michael's Church. After a brief introductory talk from Chris Thomson, the verger, we were allows to look round at our leisure. There are some fascinating artifacts to see. The head of a Celtic Cross which was found under the floor. Five carved angels each holding an heraldic shield formerly supporting the chancel roof and thought to originate from Burscough Priory. There were numerous photographs showing the various stages of the restoration that the church had undergone, back issues of the parish magazine, as well as the parish registers, for us to look at. It was an interesting and rewarding visit.
